Maintenance, Food Service, and Vending. The following is a description of each of the major areas of
Administrative Services.
Student Employment
The Office of Student Employment manages a million dollar+, need based/non-need based federal work-study
and institutional employment program. Approximately 1,000 positions are available to our Student Body.
The Student Employment Program provides jobs for full time students in either an on-campus, or an approved
off-campus agency/oganization. Eligibility to participate in this program is determined by the Office of
Student Financial Services. Samples of our departmental offerings are detailed below:
- RIAP Lab
- Archeology/Anthropology Lab
- Recreation Center
- Service Learing (Off Campus)
- Library
- Residence Life Front Desk
- Ice Center
- Performing Arts Center
- Herrmann Student Union
- WMCE Radio
- Merciad (Student Newspaper)
- Mercyhurst Day Care (Off Campus)
- Athletic Administration
Facilities Development
This area relates to the negotiation and acquisition of residential properties.
Housing Maintenance
The Housing Maintenance Team is comprised of an Ombudsman, along with four Housing Maintenance Technicians.
Residential Work Orders are written up and/or called into the office for review and follow-up. Work Orders
are to be met with a successful conclusion within a 48-hour time frame with the exception of work requiring
our team to order parts, or work requiring outside contractor assistance.
Food Service
In an effort to meet the ever growing needs of the Student Body, a wide variety of dining options/services were created.
These include Block Plans, Meal Equivalency Program, Dining Dollars, Campus Cards, Lunch-on-the-Run, and the Night Owl Service.
During the school year, these operations provide approximately 10,000 meals per week. Furthermore, the number of upper-class students living
in apartments/townhouses opting to purchase Block Meal Plans has grown from 45 students in 1997-1998, to 373 students in 2001-2002.
The 2001-2002 annual student attitude survey administered by Sodexho-Marriott to Mercyhurst students showed that 94% of the
student dining population were moderately satisfied to highly satisfied with the food service. The catering operation received
a 4.54 average on a 5-point scale (mid range between excellent and very good).
Mercyhurst College is working with Sodexho to enhance overall dining options and services, and is exploring the initiatives detailed below:
- Additional space for food service operations
- A retail coffeehouse/deli
- Pit Stop upgrades
- Laker Inn expansion
- Provide additional retail-based operations
- Exploring more vegetarian and healthy choices for the student body
- Increase upper-class participation on meal plans from 40% to 75%
- Enhance the variety and taste of foods
Cafe Diem, the Mercyhurst College Coffee House, affords students and faculty alike, an atmosphere for one to relax during their hectic days.
Vending
Soda and snack machines are located throughout Mercyhurst College. Moreover, the college offers a free newspaper program, which includes
The Erie Daily Times, The New York Times, and The USA Today. The college also has a free washer/dryer program, and is currently
considering a basic cable proposal.
