Ethical Reflection Committee
Mission
Inspired by the values articulated in the College's Mission Statement, the Ethical Reflection Committee seeks to encourage discussion of ethical issues within the entire Mercyhurst community through the research, development, and support of ethical initiatives at the College. The Ethical Reflection Committee specifically seeks to provide opportunities for students to integrate their academic and extra-curricular life, personal moral development, and sensitivity and responsibility to the global community.
Rationale
The vast majority of incoming students indicate that they are "searching for meaning/purpose in life," have "struggled to understand evil, suffering and death", and think that it is "essential" or "very important" that Mercyhurst "help them develop their personal values."
(College Students' Beliefs and Values Institutional Profile, Higher Education Research Institute)
Linked to this is the growing recognition among faculty, administrators, staff and students that there exists a need to encourage among students a living commitment to an ethical life, premised on the perceived lack of connection between the core ethical values of the Mercy tradition and the daily lives of students while at Mercyhurst. The Ethical Reflection Committee believes that the development of a program of intentional ethical reflection embodies Mercyhurst's commitment to the College's Mission Statement.
Goal
The Ethical Reflection Committee seeks, in conjunction and partnership with the All College Mission Committee:
- to provide the Mercyhurst community the opportunity and authority to oversee, coordinate and make recommendations with regard to current and future ethical reflection initiatives;
- to secure funding to support research efforts, including bringing scholars and speakers to campus, with the intent of developing best practices concerning discussion of ethical issues both within courses and in extra-curricular life;
- to review collaboration between various entities at Mercyhurst who are pursuing ethical reflection initiatives; and
- to make recommendations.
