Campus Ministry - Service Opportunities

Mercyhurst College Campus Ministry offers a wide variety of service opportunities for students and participates in the college's service learning program. Students may sign up to visit the elderly at St. Mary's Nursing Home, work at the Emmaus Soup Kitchen, respond to emergency requests from the neighborhood in the form of food and/or clothing drives and distribution. One of our most popular service programs is the college chapter of Habitat for Humanity that offers both local and national opportunities for assisting with building housing for the poor. Each year the chapter does an “alternative Spring Break” trip to some place in the U.S. to assist with a housing project. Students may also help with child care for the Fellowship of Divorced and Separated, work with inner city children at the Kid's Café, participate in Christmas on Campus (a program for inner city children) and also work to sustain the dignity of the human person, a hallmark of the Catholic faith, through a variety of peace and justice opportunities.

For those interested in peace and justice issues the college has a chapter of Pax Christi, the Catholic peace and justice lobby, works with the School of the Americas project, Students for a free Tibet, the Diversity group, the Gay-Straight Alliance, the Ophelia Project, pro-life activities, and a variety of mission trips over breaks both in and outside of the United States. These are just some of the offerings that are available for students interested in this type of service.
