Residence Life & Student Conduct

Off-Campus Living

Moving off-campus is a major transition that brings a great deal of excitement and independence. It also comes with the responsibility of living in a neighbor hood community. Similar to life on-campus at Mercyhurst College , your new off-campus neighborhood will have community standards to which all members are expected to adhere. To help you in your transition to neighborhood life, Mercyhurst College has prepared an Off-Campus Living Guide to provide you with valuable information to help navigate the many challenges of living off-campus.

Residency Requirement

All first-, second-, and third-year students who are not designated as “commuters” by the admissions office are required to live in college housing. As a student, you are required to live on-campus if all of the following apply to you:

  • You are a traditional, undergraduate student.
  • You are in your first, second, or third year of college.
  • You are not designated as a commuter student by the admissions office.

If, based on this definition, you are not required to live on-campus, you are permitted to move off-campus provided you meet all necessary Students who began classes at Mercyhurst College prior to December 31, 2007 are exempt from the third-year residency requirement.

Requesting to Move Off-Campus

It's important to follow the formal procedure before you move off-campus. Failing to do so may result in fines, fees, registration holds, and/or adjudication through the Student Code of Conduct.

Mercyhurst's procedure to move off-campus is as follows:

  1. Students must complete the Off-Campus Housing Declaration, providing the College with information about their off-campus residence. Students are required to provide their local address, names of roommates, landlord information, and lease dates.
  2. The Residence Life Office will review the form for compliance. Any concerns will be communicated to the student by writing (either via email or letter). The student must remedy the concern to the satisfaction of the Residence Life Office.
  3. Any changes in residency must be reported to the Residence Life Office.
  4. Students residing off-campus must adhere to all terms of the Student Handbook, Code of Conduct, and all applicable laws and ordinances.
  5. Failure to adhere to the requirements of the off-campus living procedures may result in a student being billed for campus housing, being denied approval to live off-campus, adjudication through the Student Code of Conduct, and/or a registration hold being applied to the student's account.
  6. The College reserves the right to limit the number of students approved to live off-campus.

Mercyhurst College complies with information requests made by City of Erie regarding names and addresses of our students living in the area for the purposes of residential code enforcement.
