About Our Services

What we do

The Mercyhurst College Writing Center is a free service to all Mercyhurst students. We are located on the west end of the Hammermill Library's lower level. Our staff is made up of students who have been trained as writing consultants to provide quality help on any type of writing assignment.

In a nutshell, our consultants...

  • Read over writing and discuss out where, why and how drafts may be improved
  • If the student does not have a draft yet, help him or her generate ideas and formulate a plan for writing a rough draft
  • Work on larger writing concerns, such as identifying audience, analyzing the assignment, organizing ideas and clarifying concepts
  • If the student writer so desires, send a report form that describes the consultation to the writer's professor

The Writing Center also...

  • Provides helpful handouts on everything from creating strong thesis statements to using commas appropriately
  • Offers two computers from which students can print papers (if you need good paper, bring your own)
  • Offers a grammar helpline by which students can call x2303 and receive quick answers to bothersome questions about grammar, punctuation, in-text citation, and so forth.

What we don't do

  • We do not accept dropped-off papers. Our consultants involve students actively in the writing process because our mission is to help them become better writers.

For an appointment

  • Schedule a 30 minute session on schedule affixed to the Writing Center door
  • Call x2303 to schedule an appointment
  • Drop by with your draft or assignment and see if a consultant is available
